Off to The Sahara - Scared & Excited in equal measure (blog #16)

Written by

Dear All

So I am off to the Sahara on Friday, (2 more sleeps very excited and scared in equal measure), thank you for your support to date. I will never be able to thank you enough for the kindness you have give me mentally or physically over the last two years and if you have also been able to support Prostate Cancer UK in that time thank you even more, the money is making a difference.

Just 2 more sleeps - scared & excited!!!

If you want to send supporting emails to me (text only, anything supportive, abusive or funny, I love them all, it is impossible to offend me) that I will get each evening or track my progress during the race each day, you can do both of these via this link organisers' website. HOWEVER, none of the facilities will go live until Saturday 8 April, so if you click on it now, you won't find anything!  Once they are live, the instructions are easy to follow. You will need my running number for the email - it's number 1041.  If you have any problems using the site, please call 08444 874064 and speak to Sarah Chard in office hours who works with the Marathon Des Sables team.

I am issued with a GPS tracker that will allow you to track my progress in real-time. You should be aware, however, that on rare occasions the tracker may lose signal or have battery power issues. My position is updated every 10 minutes. There is also a live web cam at the finish, I will do my best to embarrass myself each day with a little jig. Last year the tracker was a bit clunky to track however I am assured that this year it is easier (we will see).

I have the ability to send one short email after the race each day to one person so this will be sent  to my wife who will then forward to a colleague at work, Shirlee Davies, who will then send on to you as the database is held at work. I will do my best to give you a feel of what that days race was like. The first day I can do this is Sunday evening 9th  and the last one is Friday evening 14th however because it is a Bank holiday on the Friday you may not get the last one. Please do not reply to Shirlee or send emails to my usual email addresses as I will only see them when I return to the UK.

Please feel free to share this or any of my emails with anyone you feel may be interested.

Finally, I have been doing Bikram yoga for the last couple of weeks in a room heated to 41C to get acclimatised for the desert heat, my instructor came out with some wise words that made me think how many times I had failed at the first part of the utopian message “we should all aim in life to give and not remember but receive and never forget”. That said,  I will never forget what you all have given to my life, thank you.

Hope you enjoy the run with me!
