Mentally things have been very tough (blog #6)

Written by

Sorry its been too long since my last contact but I guess the fact I have not felt like it is the measure of where I have been mentally for a while.
I hope you are all keeping well, I know that some of you have had your own challenges whilst I have been away and hope that they are moving ahead positively.
So what have I been up to other than soaking up the sun whenever I can?

A whole lot of treatments

Well I successfully completed 18 weeks of chemo followed by 6 weeks of radiotherapy, the build up over that period is still taking its toll on me physically however from what I understand the early signs are that it has shrunk what it could and the hormone drugs appear to be stopping things from growing bigger for now so that is a good result.

Mentally, whilst my prognosis has not changed, I get in a good place for much of the time, thanks in no small part to running. I have been running around 6 days a week, varying distances from short to very long and whilst I am slower and find it hard going the process of planning where I am going, reading about kit/nutrition etc and of course the actual running itself is the best distraction that I could have. Not only that but most of the side affects that I get do not happen when I run, my consultant said perhaps he should prescribe running to all his patients as it appears to be so good for me.

Family and friends have continued to be fantastic, I try not to be a burden on them (well no more than before!) and even my neighbour has stopped having late night parties every weekend. For some reason Ollie likes his Dad around before and after school even if I only ever seem to be getting him to do his homework (his grades have improved mind!).

The doctor has signed me off for another 3 months as there are some unresolved issues that would keep me from working but hopefully they will all subside over the next couple of months and I will be back, just like Arnie! I don’t quite know what I will do on my return but am confident that Dave and Neal will find something appropriate, their support has been exceptional.

Finally, I am planning to be in Haymarket next Wednesday afternoon the 22nd from 2-00ish to 5-00 (I have to attend a seminar thing in the evening) so if anyone fancies a chat or a decaf green tea (I cant do caffeine any more) it would be good to see you and hear what the working world is up to.

Take care and thanks for the support that you have given me over the last eight months, this time last year I was about to go on a holiday of a lifetime for 3 weeks in the USA, what the difference a year makes?
