The Brighton marathon approaches (blog #4)

Written by

My last  generic  update before the big Brighton Marathon day on Sunday.
Firstly  I continue to be overwhelmed by the support I have had from everyone whilst I am going through my treatment, it has made a massive difference mentally and enabled me to put some darker thoughts to the back of my mind sometimes, I have also raised a few quid for Prostate Cancer UK along the way.

Brighton Marathon

The last few weeks have been a bit harder work, the cumulative effects of 4 chemo sessions have started to take their toll with tiredness, hot flushes, toe nails that want to fall off and most seriously, a low immune system which has had me laid up with a chest infection effectively for the last few weeks since I ran 21 miles in mid March.
The above has dented my training plan somewhat in so far as I have had a forced rest and whilst that is not the end of the world and it has ensured I don't get a last minute injury it has  also  put paid to any thoughts I had of a half decent time. What does that mean in numbers, well I was dreaming of a sub 4 hour time but realistically sub 5 hours will be good now. The current plan is to run with the 4-15 pacer and see how I go, if I need to slow then I can.
On the plus side, the weather forecast is good so hopefully no rain and a bit of sun to finish off, great to bring out those all important crowds.
I know that I have a few supporters coming on the day (including my bro in law all the way from Canada just to see me and my wife Sarah who is doing the 10k race just before mine ) but if you are interested you can track my progress on the free "Brighton Marathon " app. It is really easy to download and then all you need to do is put in my name and click on it amongst all the Webbers and it will tell you roughly where I am on the course. The race (ha ha) starts at 9-15.
As for a return to work, I am still hoping I will be both physically and mentally able to be back in the summer although with more chemo and radiotherapy to go its just a hope at this time.
So that's it for now, please feel free to spread the word about getting early doctors checks with any symptoms to anyone else you know as awareness and early intervention may just literally save someone's life!
Next update next week.
